LIVING JEWELRY

WEARING YOUR OWN BODY

LIVING JEWELRY.jpg

I created jewelry that explored what it means to be alive juxtaposed against what it means to be dead to emphasize the value to which was alive. The idea of Living Jewelry is to try and explore what it would look like if we were to value being alive by wearing ourselves as jewelry.

People oftentimes fail to consider our own bodies as beautiful. We tend to complain about our body and try to fit it into societal norms. We forget that our bodies are not forever, and this is all we have now! With Living Jewelry, I decided to celebrate the life inherent within us by creating jewelry that was literally built from ourselves.

I added pearls to my jewelry. Pearls are the only gemstone created by a living organism. But pearls are not alive. The creature which made them is gone and a pearl is only a remnant of which was once alive. I wanted to take this beautiful remnant and combine it with the most familiar aspect of being alive: the human body.
